The first step to talking about sex is… well…. being able to talk about sex. For the most of us, when we were younger we were taught (either indirectly or directly) that the subject of sex was inappropriate. In fact, when I was younger, I remember having to refer to my crotch as a “naughty” area. And even now, I find that many people have problems talking about the subject of sex to other people – outside the context of a joke (because God knows how many gay jokes and sexual references there are floating out there). The inability to talk about sexual subjects outside the safety of humor and privacy plagues many of us. This is a problem. Now I’m not advocating running around in public screaming, “PENIS! VAGINA! TESTICLES! CLITORIS!” nor am I advocating telling your friend about last night’s sexual exploits while a five year old is within hearing range. Nor am I saying we should all talk about sex constantly, if that’s not the type of person we are. What I am advocating is the ability to talk about sex to other people without feeling shame or guilt. Sex is a very integral part of our life. Especially for something that the majority of people do not spend a lot of time doing. But it’s not just sex that is important. The subject of sex ties into each of our sexualities and sexual behavior. To be unable to voice our opinions on the subject is doing ourselves a grave injustice. -Miss Li P.S.
